If you go the other way round things can get harder. Well, I hope this post inspires you to create your own double denim outfit one of these days. Because dammit, the world needs more double denim. As much as I want it to be Spring, it’s in the 20s and snowing in Denver currently. If it’s still chilly where you are too, this is a a fabulous late Winter / early Spring look.
I reach for this jacket a ton and often carry it with me on Summer evenings. This look is based around a light colour palette. Use plain white as your anchor colour to get it right. Here, the T-shirt and sneakers serve as the base while the cream jacket and light-grey jeans bring the colour to the table, albeit very subtly.
How to pull off a denim-on-denim look?
Keep it simple and minimal – denim can be a great style for dressing up one’s entire body. But if you’re going to combine it with other fashion trends, opt for the more conservative option and keep your accessories to a bare minimum. Don’t try to emulate fashion divas by wearing multiple layers of blouses; these types of looks are best reserved for magazines. #1 is my usual plane/train traveling outfit because it’s comfortable, easy to put together, and I can take the jacket off if I get warm .

Suede boots or black sneakers are the footwear win, keeping your undershirt dark at night or light for the day. A floral shirt under a light-wash blue denim jacket with a pair of black skinny jeans and buff Chelsea boots. A navy blue fitted denim jacket layered over a black tee with black slim-fit jeans and black sneakers. A black denim jacket over a white tee with navy blue jeans and simple white sneakers. I don’t care for all dark or all light denim pieces worn together. That’s the only denim on denim look I’ve ever thought I might possibly get behind.
Black, gray, or even white can enter the game. I usually wear #1 because it’s the most timeless with basic items. I will also mix and match white and blue denim, or coloured denim jeans with a white or blue denim jacket. Double denim or a denim-on-denim look has not always been the most popular way of rocking denim. This all-over denim look aka Canadian tux was the butt of all kinds of jokes sometime back. It was thought of as a crude attempt at whomping up a getup to look like a rockstar.
It was considered basic, unsophisticated, and uncool back in the day or suitable only for models and rockstars at best. No more a laugh a minute these days, this iconic double denim look has in fact risen from the ashes in the 2020s. Anyone can pull this off and look good in this style of denim. There is a certain je ne sais quoi about this denim on denim look and it is a great way to channel your love for this fabric and look dapper at the same time.
Again, clear contrast between the legwear and the top is what makes this look a winner in our book. Couple that with some simple white sneakers and you’re onto a winner. From casual to smart casual, it’s on to the outfits. Feel free to throw in greys, more white, and non-neutral denim because there is no need to stick to blue. I do though, like the neutral statement that double denim can make.
We’ve been wearing the L’Agence Janelle jacket for a few years now , and it’s an absolute classic. One of our best purchases by far, and I’ll continue to reach for it a ton. It is however more of a fitted denim jacket, and I found myself craving something looser and oversized – more 90s vibes! Jeans and a denim jacket are a timeless combo that works – it’s comfortable, relaxed and chic.
